James M. Hillas, PC

James M. Hillas was born and raised in the Garden State. He escaped New Jersey at the age of 17 to attend Colgate University, and earned a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from Hampshire College in Amherst, MA.

Jim worked as a newspaper reporter at the Daily Hampshire Gazette in Northampton, MA before migrating to Portland, Oregon, where he got his law degree from Lewis & Clark College and learned to fly fish. After a brief stint at a small firm in Coos Bay, Oregon, Jim returned to Portland and joined one of Portland’s largest law firms as a litigator. He became a partner in 2002.

In 2010, Jim left the big firm to work for himself. He serves as “outside” general counsel for startups and other small businesses.

His client service philosophy is rooted in the book “The Go-Giver”, a business parable by Bob Burg and John David Mann. “The Go-Giver” emphasizes putting others interests first and continually adding value to their lives, which ultimately leads to unexpected returns.

Jim is a frequent presenter at continuing legal education seminars and the author of numerous articles on topics of interest to small business owners. He lives in Northeast Portland. When not running his law practice, he enjoys time with his family, travel, exercise, exploring the outdoors and learning about wine.
